In 2007, Raider’s owner Al Davis hired him and this made him the youngest head coach in Oaklands Raiders history at the age of 37. He signed a two-year contract worth $4 million and offered a team option for 2009. Kiffin and the Raiders won the preseason opener 27-23 over the Arizona Cardinals. It was reported in 2008 by an ESPN NFL analyst that Davis was trying to force Kiffin to resign after his first season. He failed to resign as it would mean he had to give up $2 million of his salary for the rest of the contract but Davis fired him via a phone call. His head coach role ended with a 5-15 record and his contract was terminated and the $2.6 million for 2018 was not paid.

Lane worked as the offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama from 2014 to December 2019 before moving to Florida Atlantic and becoming the head coach at Ole Miss. He is in his fifth season at Ole Miss with a record of 34-15 mark. He has led the Rebels to four bowl berths and two New Year’s Six Appearances since 2020.
